So, so cold.

My back, my neck, my arms. I couldn’t feel my fingers…could I?

The blackness lifted as I opened my eyes. My vision blurred. My hands, my fingers—could I move them? They were splayed on the ground, propping me up. I tried to push myself to my feet. Nothing.

Then I tried to clench my hands.

I saw my fingers claw at the ground, but felt nothing.

Nothing.

Nothing…then a piercing pain in my neck. Pain like icy fire consumed me.

The edges of my vision narrowed. I shouldn’t pass out. Should I? But sleep… Pain or sleep—

Except there was no sleep. There was death. My eyes popped open again.

A faint echo in the distance. A woman. Yelling.

Sylvie.

“Geoff? Geoff!” The desperation in her voice made me cringe. It hurt my heart. My still-beating heart.

I was alive.

“We got it, Geoff!” Clarence screamed. His voice was triumphant. “Geoff?” Or frantic? “Geoff!” Certainly moving closer.

My mouth refused to open, and the words I wanted to scream—I’m here. I’m alive. Don’t let me die—refused to come.

The cold had faded. That was surely good? Or maybe I was numb. Maybe I wasn’t as alive as I thought.
